Definition:

Premature mortality rates (PMR) are often used as an overall indicator of population health and are correlated with other commonly used measures. PMR is an important indicator of the general health of a population, with high PMR indicating poor health status. PMR is calculated as the rate of deaths of residents aged 0-74 years, per 1,000 residents aged 0 to 74 years. The rates are typically age- and sex-adjusted to account for regional differences that allow a fair comparison between regions or groups. Health regions are often ordered by PMR in graphs to visualize trends in rates and other outcomes by overall health status.
