Definition:

A term used to describe the period of length of stay of hospital inpatients. The definition of short stay has varied in the research conducted at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP):

• Roos et al. (1994) defined short stay as all hospital separations with a length of stay lasting less than 60 days.
  Black et al. (1993), Brownell et al. (1996), Frohlich et al. (1994) also used this definition in their research.
  
  
• De Coster et al. (2000) defined short stay care as all hospital separations with a length of stay lasting less than 30 days.
  De Coster et al. (2005), Kozyrskyj et al. (2002), Martens et al. (2002), Martens et al. (2003) and Stewart et al. (2002) also used this definition in their research.
  
  
• Fransoo et al. (2009) defined short stay care as all hospital separations with a length of stay lasting less than 14 days.
  Fransoo et al. (2013) also used this definition in their research.
