Definition:

In Katz et al. (2019), First Nations Community refers to the 63 identified First Nations in Manitoba and includes both status and non-status residents on reserve. The federal Indian Act (1876) specifies that First Nation communities or nations of Indigenous peoples in Canada can be made up of several bands ( Legal Line , 2019; Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, 2017). This term is sometimes used instead of "First Nation Reserve".

In previous MCHP research (Heaman et al. (2012); Fransoo et al. (2013)), First Nations communities were defined as, a legal list of First Nations communities maintained by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), (formerly called Indian and Northern Affairs Canada - (INAC)) that includes the following Census Sub Division (CSD) types: Indian Government Districts, Reserves, Indian Settlements, Terre Reservées, Nisga'a Lands, Nisga'a Villages and Teslin Lands. This broader definition of a First Nation community includes a selection of the following CSD types: Chartered Community (CC), Hamlet (HAM), Northern Hamlet (NH), Northern Village (NV), Settlement (SET), Town (T), and Village (VL).
