Definition:

Specialists are physicians whose practices are focused on a specific area of medicine in which they have undergone additional training. They can be identified by a code value in the MDBLOC variable in the Medical Services (Physician Claims) data and in the Provider Registry data.

NOTE: this term has also been called physician specialty.

Examples of specialists include physicians in the area of psychiatry, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, medical specialty (internal, neurology, geriatrics, rheumatology, dermatology), general surgery, oral surgery, and surgery specialist (thoracic & cardio, plastic, urological, orthopaedic, neurological, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology).
