Since May 1999, the Manitoba Maternal Serum Screening
Programme has made "Triple Test" screening
available to all pregnant women in Manitoba (prior to this time the alpha-fetoprotein screening test was available to all pregnant women in Manitoba). The Triple
Test is a blood test that screens for chromosomal
abnormalities and birth defects. This blood test is
voluntary, and the graphs in this section show the
rate of women giving birth who had the screen performed during their pregnancies.
Different rates of uptake are likely influenced by
the patients' perceptions of risks and benefits, their
socioeconomic status, and their attitudes toward abortion.
Further, a patient's decision to have the genetic
test may be affected by the physician's attitude and
the information provided during early prenatal visits.
